It’s said that cases are won or lost depending on how well your witnesses are prepared. Consequently, lawyers put a lot of stock [pun intended] in Witness Preparation.
But an eastern Nevada rancher representing himself because he says he can’t afford $500-an-hour lawyers is taking on the Southern Nevada Authority at a hearing in Carson City, Nevada. But the rancher has a challenge no lawyer would ever undertake. It has to do with the witnesses he wants to call.
As reported by “The Ely Times,” the rancher wants to call 8,213 cattle, sheep and horses to testify on why the water authority shouldn’t get rural Nevada water to supply big city Las Vegas homes at his herd’s expense. Hank Vogler, the “Spring Valley rancher wants to call his livestock as Witnesses.” Also see “Heard around the West” — High Country News.
However, what’s particularly hard to believe isn’t that someone wants to hear from a horse or a steer. It’s that with “Las Vegas Housing Market Conditions” still in the tank, it’s a mystery why the water agency is still trying to tap the rural groundwater from 16 rural counties to supply an already outrageously overbuilt housing market. Sure, they’re calling it “a safety net.” But by their own estimates, the groundwater they want to take from rural Nevada could supply as many as 400,000 homes! Then, again, by comparison with such silliness, maybe the idea of testifying cattle does make more sense.
And it isn’t just because the mooing, bleating and neighing testimony of livestock is necessarily problematic. It’s that other stuff that like bleating politicians and mooing bureaucrats reliably comes out of them.
As ranchers and rural people all know, the thing about inviting cattle, sheep and horses inside is that they’re going to do what they gotta do. And with that much livestock amidst all those elected officials and government types that adds up to a lot of manure.
